Scirtothrips
Scirtothrips
Description
Taxonomic position: The genus Scirtothrips belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These insects are globally recognized as major agricultural pests due to their feeding habits and their ability to rapidly colonize a wide range of host plants.
Affected crops: These thrips are polyphagous and known to cause severe damage to citrus, grapes, avocado, tea, cotton, and various greenhouse ornamental plants. They predominantly colonize the tender, actively growing tissues of the plants.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through the egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. Eggs are deposited within the plant tissues. The duration of the development is highly dependent on temperature, with warmer climates allowing for multiple generations per year, leading to exponential population growth.
Type of damage and economic impact: Feeding activities involve piercing plant cells and sucking the contents. Symptoms include silvering or bronzing of leaves, distortion of young shoots, and significant scarring on fruits (often referred to as 'ring spotting'). Severe infestations can cause fruit drop and substantial economic loss for growers.
Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential. Recommended strategies include:
- Monitoring populations using colored sticky traps.
- Applying selective insecticides that target the larval stages.
- Implementing biological control using natural predators like predatory mites.
- Maintaining proper orchard hygiene and pruning to reduce hiding spots.
