Scirtothrips bispinosus

Scirtothrips bispinosus belongs to the order Thysanoptera, family Thripidae. This minute insect pest poses a serious threat to agriculture, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, due to its highly polyphagous nature and its ability to rapidly adapt to various environmental conditions.

The pest attacks a wide range of agricultural and ornamental crops. Its host plants include tea plantations, citrus fruits, mango, grapes, as well as various vegetable and flower crops grown both in open fields and protected environments like greenhouses.

The biology of this species is closely linked to temperature; under favorable conditions, the generation cycle accelerates significantly. Females lay eggs directly into the tissues of young leaves or flower buds. After passing through the first and second larval instars, the prepupal and pupal stages, the insect emerges as an adult capable of active reproduction.

The damage caused by Scirtothrips bispinosus manifests as leaf deformation, necrotic spotting, silvering of the foliage, and stunted shoot growth. By feeding on plant sap, the thrips puncture the epidermis, leading to significant loss of crop quality and marketability, while also weakening the plant's immune system and making it susceptible to secondary fungal infections.

Management strategies require an integrated approach: using resistant cultivars, implementing proper cultural practices, and timely monitoring using blue sticky traps. When populations reach high levels, chemical insecticides from classes such as spinosyns, neonicotinoids, or pyrethroids are utilized; however, rotating chemical groups is critical to prevent the development of resistant populations.
