Description
The citrus thrips (Scirtothrips citri) is a small, sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. As a significant agricultural pest, it poses a major threat to commercial citrus production, particularly in warm, arid, and semi-arid climates globally.
This pest primarily attacks members of the Rutaceae family, including oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and mandarins. Beyond citrus, it can also infest various other plants, including grapes and various broad-leaved weeds, which act as reservoirs for the pest population between growing seasons.
The biology of Scirtothrips citri is characterized by a rapid life cycle consisting of egg, larval, prepupal, pupal, and adult stages. Because they thrive in warm weather, multiple overlapping generations can occur throughout the year, allowing for exponential population growth if left unmanaged.
Damage is caused by both larvae and adults feeding on the surface of young leaves and developing fruit. This feeding creates distinctive silvery scars, necrotic tissues, and permanent ring-like scabs on the fruit skin, which significantly lowers fruit grade and marketability even if the internal quality remains unaffected.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Growers should prioritize the following actions:

- Application of selective insecticides during periods of peak emergence.
