Yellow tea thrips (Scirtothrips dorsalis) is a significant pest belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. This insect is globally recognized as a destructive agricultural pest due to its ability to cause severe damage to a wide range of horticultural and field crops, often acting as a vector for various plant viruses.

The host range of Scirtothrips dorsalis is exceptionally diverse. It commonly infests economically important crops such as peppers, chilies, strawberries, grapes, citrus fruits, and numerous ornamental species. Because it thrives in both tropical and temperate greenhouse environments, it poses a constant risk to international plant trade and local agricultural productivity.

The life cycle of the yellow tea thrips encompasses the egg, two larval stages, two pupal stages, and the adult phase. Pupation often occurs in the soil or protected niches on the host plant. Under favorable conditions with temperatures exceeding 25°C, the lifecycle is completed rapidly, leading to overlapping generations and a massive population buildup within a single season.

The primary damage is caused by both larvae and adults feeding on tender tissues. The symptoms include silvering, bronzing of foliage, curling of leaf margins, and scarring of fruit skin, which significantly lowers the market value of the crop. In severe infestations, growth is stunted, and flowering is severely inhibited, leading to significant yield losses.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Strategies include rigorous phytosanitary inspections of imported materials, the use of blue or yellow sticky traps for monitoring, and the application of chemical insecticides. Due to the insect's tendency to develop resistance, it is critical to rotate pesticide classes and integrate biological control agents, such as predatory mites and lacewing larvae.
