Long-winged thrips
Scirtothrips longipennis
Description
Systematic position. The long-winged thrips (Scirtothrips longipennis) belongs to the order Thysanoptera, family Thripidae. It is a highly specialized pest primarily affecting indoor and greenhouse ornamental plants, characterized by its minute size and significant damage potential to sensitive foliage.
Host range. This pest primarily attacks various tropical and subtropical ornamental species. Key affected plants include Ficus species, Anthurium, Dieffenbachia, Gardenia, and many palm varieties. It is particularly problematic in nursery environments where monocultures facilitate rapid population growth.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. The development process is strictly temperature-dependent; in warm greenhouse conditions, the entire life cycle can be completed in less than three weeks. Both larvae and adults are highly mobile and tend to congregate in succulent growing tissues.
Damage and pest status. The pest damages plants by piercing cells and extracting their contents. This feeding pattern creates a characteristic "silvery" appearance on the foliage, followed by chlorosis, necrotic spotting, and severe leaf deformation. Heavy infestations often result in reduced photosynthesis and premature shedding of younger leaves.
- Deploy blue or yellow sticky traps to monitor adult populations effectively.
- Inspect all incoming nursery stock for signs of infestation before placing them in collections.
- Utilize integrated pest management by encouraging biological control agents like predatory mites (e.g., Amblyseius spp.).
- Apply systematic insecticides or insect growth regulators as a chemical control measure.
- Prune and destroy heavily infested plant parts to minimize the local pest population density.
