Scirtothrips perseae, commonly known as avocado thrips, is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. It is considered a major economic threat, specifically targeting commercial avocado production across subtropical regions.
The primary host for this pest is the avocado tree (Persea americana). The thrips feed on young foliage and the surface of developing fruits, causing localized damage that severely impacts fruit quality. While the internal quality of the fruit is rarely compromised, the external scarring renders the fruit unsuitable for premium markets.
The life cycle of the avocado thrips consists of egg, two larval instars, two pupal stages, and adult. Eggs are typically inserted into the tissue of young, tender leaves or fruit skin. Development is highly sensitive to ambient temperature, allowing the insect to complete multiple generations rapidly during the peak growth season.
Damage symptoms are distinct and characterized by "russeting" or corky, brown scarring on the fruit skin, often appearing as a network of cracks. On leaves, the feeding activity leads to deformation, curling, and early senescence. High infestations significantly reduce the vigor of the tree and can lead to yield losses over time.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the recommended strategy for control. This involves routine monitoring using sticky cards to determine population density and the timing of insecticide applications. Biocontrol options, such as releasing beneficial mites, are also utilized to suppress populations. Proper orchard sanitation and maintaining plant vigor are essential components of a long-term management plan.
