Scolopendra (lat. Scolopendra) is a genus of large centipedes belonging to the Scolopendridae family. This pest prefers dark, moist environments such as dense mulch, organic debris, or deep soil layers. Scolopendra are nocturnal creatures that thrive in humid conditions. Their life cycle includes a brood-caring phase where the female protects the eggs until hatching, which allows for a high survival rate in stable greenhouse or high-humidity field environments.

The range of crops susceptible to scolopendra damage includes vegetables and soft fruits grown in moist soil or hydroponic systems. The pests gnaw at tender stems, roots, and tubers. These mechanical injuries not only weaken the plant but also serve as entry points for secondary infections like fungal rots and various soil-borne pathogens.

The damage caused by these centipedes is often observed as sudden wilting or stunted growth in young crops. Their harmfulness is heightened by the fact that they hide during the day, making early detection difficult. Left unmanaged, they can cause significant thinning of seedling stands and lower the overall market quality of harvestable vegetables.
