The Mediterranean centipede (Scolopendra cingulata) is a member of the class Chilopoda and the family Scolopendridae. It is a large, predatory myriapod distributed across Southern Europe and neighboring regions. While primarily beneficial as a predator of small invertebrates, it is often categorized as a nuisance or secondary pest in intensive gardening environments, where its burrowing habits can disrupt plant development.
In agricultural settings, these centipedes are known to affect tender vegetable seedlings, strawberries, and ornamental potted plants. Their presence is most problematic in greenhouses or raised beds where organic matter is abundant and soil moisture is consistently high. While they do not consume large quantities of plant tissue, their movement through the rhizosphere often leads to significant physical damage to the root systems of young plants.
The biological cycle of this species is nocturnal and dependent on high humidity. Scolopendra cingulata spend their days hiding beneath stones, mulch, or deep in moist soil crevices. The lifecycle includes several molting stages, with growth rates largely determined by ambient temperature and prey availability. When prey populations fluctuate, centipedes may become more erratic in their search for food, increasing the likelihood of incidental root damage.

Managing this pest involves habitat modification and cultural control practices to reduce their population density in the cultivation area. Effective strategies include the following steps:

- Improve soil drainage to eliminate the damp micro-environments they prefer.
