This species is taxonomically notable for its dual behavior; it is a specialized predator of spider mites while also retaining the ability to feed on plant juices when prey density is low, categorizing it as a facultative phytophage.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle comprises the egg, two larval stages, pro-nymph, nymph, and adult stages. Adults are identifiable by three distinct pairs of dark spots on their forewings. Development is temperature-dependent, with rapid generations occurring during warm, dry periods. This makes them particularly problematic in greenhouse environments where consistent heat accelerates their lifecycle.
Affected crops and harmfulness: The species targets various crops, including cotton, cucumbers, grapes, and citrus. While it acts as a beneficial natural enemy by consuming spider mites, it becomes a pest when mite populations are exhausted. It is common to find them in integrated pest management programs, where their dual role must be carefully balanced to prevent economic damage to the primary crop.
