Description

The Orache moth (Scrobipalpa atriplicella) is a species of moth belonging to the family Gelechiidae, order Lepidoptera. It is a well-known agricultural pest in regions where plants from the Amaranthaceae family, particularly the genus Chenopodium and Atriplex, are prevalent.

The primary hosts of this pest include various species of weeds, as well as sugar beet, fodder beet, and table beet. In agricultural settings, the moth can cause substantial economic losses if the population density is not managed during the critical stages of crop development.

The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The insect typically overwinters as a pupa in the soil or within plant debris. After emerging in spring, the adults lay eggs on the leaves of host plants. Depending on the local climate, the insect can complete two to three generations per year, with peak activity usually occurring during the warmer summer months.

Damage is caused primarily by the larvae. Young larvae act as leaf miners, creating galleries within the leaf tissue. As they grow, they move to the leaf surface, spinning webs to tie leaves together or folding them to feed safely inside. This activity destroys leaf area, hinders photosynthesis, and leads to reduced root yield and poor quality of the harvested product.
