The Potato tuber moth (Scrobipalpa ergasima) is a destructive agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. This insect is recognized globally as a significant threat to potato production, causing substantial economic losses in both field conditions and storage facilities.

This species primarily attacks plants within the Solanaceae family. While potatoes are the main target, the pest is also known to feed on tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Furthermore, the ability to survive on various wild solanaceous weeds allows the population to persist and migrate into cultivated areas throughout the growing season.

The biology of Scrobipalpa ergasima is marked by overlapping generations, especially in warmer climates. Females typically deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves or in the eyes of potato tubers. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding, boring into the plant tissue to create tunnels, which protects them from environmental factors and predators.
