The beet moth (Scrobipalpa ocellatella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. It is a significant pest of various beet crops, including sugar beet, red beet, and fodder beet, which can cause severe economic losses in both large-scale farming and seed production.

The host range of this insect is primarily limited to the Amaranthaceae family, particularly the genus Beta. The moth's ability to produce multiple generations within a single growing season, depending on the climatic conditions, makes it a persistent challenge for farmers in affected regions.

The life cycle of the beet moth consists of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. The insect overwinters mainly as a pupa in the soil or within old plant debris. In the spring, the adult moths emerge, mate, and deposit eggs on the leaves. Newly hatched larvae are highly active and immediately begin feeding.

The damage caused by the larvae is distinct and damaging. Young larvae create "mines" within the leaf tissue, leaving visible trails. As they mature, they move toward the petiole and the crown of the root. This feeding behavior stunts plant growth and significantly reduces root weight and sugar content. Furthermore, the tunnels created by the larvae serve as entry points for rot-inducing pathogens.
