Description
Scutellonema bradys, commonly referred to as the yam nematode, is a significant plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. It is recognized as a major limiting factor in the cultivation of yam (Dioscorea spp.), causing extensive economic losses globally, particularly in tropical agriculture.
The primary host for this pest is yam, though it can survive on other tuberous crops and various weed species. Infestation occurs primarily through the use of infected tubers as planting material. Because the nematodes reside deep within the tuber tissue, they are easily transported across regions, facilitating the spread of the pest.
The biology of Scutellonema bradys involves both ectoparasitic and endoparasitic feeding behaviors. The nematode penetrates the tuber tissue, where it feeds on cortical cells, causing tissue breakdown. The entire life cycle, including egg, larval, and adult stages, can be completed within the tuber, making the nematode highly persistent even in stored produce.
Damage symptoms include extensive cracking, dry rot, and the formation of characteristic lesions or "yam holes" on the tuber surface. These lesions weaken the tuber structure, making it highly susceptible to secondary pathogens such as bacteria and fungi, which can result in the complete decay of the crop during the storage phase.
Management strategies focus on prevention and sanitation:

- Hot water treatment of planting material;
