Description
Scythropia is a genus of small moths belonging to the family Yponomeutidae. The most notable species in this genus is Scythropia crataegella, which is widely recognized for its impact on various Rosaceae plants. These moths are generally small, and their presence is often identified by the damage caused to the foliage of host trees rather than the sight of the adults themselves.
These pests primarily target ornamental and fruit-bearing trees such as hawthorn, apple, pear, and plum. When populations are high, the larvae can strip a significant amount of leaf tissue from the tree, hindering its ability to photosynthesize and potentially causing stress that affects overall vigor and long-term fruit yield.
The biological development of this moth is synchronized with the bud burst of host plants. The larvae spend the winter as early instars inside protected cocoons hidden in the bark crevices of the host tree. As spring temperatures rise, the larvae emerge to feed on fresh buds and newly opening leaves, weaving them together with silk threads.
The damage caused by Scythropia is characterized by the skeletalization of leaves and the creation of dense silken nests. These structures protect the larvae while they feed collectively. In severe cases, a tree may lose a large percentage of its foliage, which severely impacts its physiological state and makes it more susceptible to secondary pests and environmental stressors.
