Description
The genus Sehirus belongs to the family Cydnidae, commonly known as burrowing bugs. These insects are distinguished by their robust, shield-like bodies, adapted for movement through soil and leaf litter. Because of their fossorial (digging) habits, they are often overlooked until significant damage to host plants becomes visible.
These pests primarily target plants in the Lamiaceae family, including various herbs like mint and sage, although they can also be found on other herbaceous vegetation. They utilize their piercing-sucking mouthparts to penetrate plant stems and roots, withdrawing sap and disrupting the flow of essential nutrients throughout the plant system.
The life cycle of Sehirus involves overwintering as adults in the soil profile. As soil temperatures rise in the spring, the insects emerge to feed and begin their reproductive cycle. Eggs are laid in the soil or at the base of host plants. The nymphs go through multiple instars, gradually increasing in size while feeding on the roots and lower stems of their host plants.
Damage symptoms include wilting, stunting, and the appearance of yellow or necrotic spots on leaves where the bugs have fed. In severe infestations, the cumulative effect of sap loss and tissue damage can significantly reduce plant vigor, delay maturity, and decrease the final yield, particularly in sensitive aromatic or vegetable crops.
Effective management strategies focus on cultural practices to disrupt the life cycle of the pest. These include mechanical tillage to disturb overwintering sites, proper sanitation by removing crop residues, and maintaining clean borders to minimize weed hosts. If chemical control is necessary, targeted applications of systemic insecticides can be effective, provided that environmental safety guidelines and pre-harvest intervals are strictly observed.
