Selandria

Selandria is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae, commonly known as sawflies. These insects are significant pests in both domestic gardens and commercial nurseries, as they are capable of causing substantial damage to ornamental plants and various fruit-bearing shrubs.

The host plants for Selandria species typically include members of the Rosaceae family, with roses and wild shrubs being primary targets. The damage is exclusively caused by the larval stage, which is often referred to as a false caterpillar, due to its resemblance to the larvae of moths and butterflies despite their different taxonomic classification.

The life cycle of Selandria involves complete metamorphosis. Adult females utilize their saw-like ovipositors to insert eggs into the leaf tissue of host plants. Once the larvae emerge, they begin feeding voraciously, often staying on the underside of leaves to avoid predators and environmental stress. Depending on the species, they may overwinter in the soil as prepupae.

The most recognizable sign of a Selandria infestation is leaf skeletonization. The larvae feed on the leaf blade while leaving the veins intact, creating a distinct lacy pattern. Severe infestations lead to extensive defoliation, which hampers the plant's photosynthetic capacity, potentially leading to stunted growth or failure to flower in the subsequent season.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective way to handle Selandria populations. Cultural practices, such as clearing debris from under bushes and cultivating the soil, are effective at disrupting the life cycle. When chemical intervention is necessary, applying insecticides during the early larval stages provides the best results, as the insects are most vulnerable during this period.
