Early Thorn
Selenia dentaria
Description
The Early Thorn (Selenia dentaria) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. This moth is widespread throughout temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, often found in woodland, hedgerows, and orchards where it can behave as a minor pest of various deciduous trees and shrubs.
The adult moth has a wingspan ranging from 40 to 50 mm. The wings are characterized by a brownish to ochre-yellow ground color with darker, wavy lines that give them a distinctive scalloped appearance. The caterpillars, commonly known as "loopers," have a unique locomotion pattern and possess excellent camouflage, often resembling twigs, which allows them to remain undetected on host plants.
The primary damage is caused by the larval stage (caterpillars), which feed on the foliage of diverse woody plants. Among the affected hosts are various orchard trees such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as wild species like birch, alder, and willow. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, which stresses the plants and may affect fruit development and overall health.
The life cycle typically consists of two broods per year in warmer regions, while cooler areas may see only one. They overwinter as pupae hidden within the soil or in leaf litter beneath the host tree. In the spring, the adults emerge to mate and lay eggs on the leaves. The larvae go through several instars before pupating, completing their development cycle by mid to late summer.
Management strategies for the Early Thorn focus on integrated pest management practices. Key approaches include:
- Maintaining orchard hygiene by removing leaf debris to reduce pupation sites.
- Monitoring adult moth activity using pheromone or light traps to determine the timing of egg-laying.
- Applying target-specific biological insecticides or selective chemical pesticides during the early larval stage if economic damage thresholds are exceeded.
