The Latticed Heath (scientific name Semiothisa clathrata, or Chiasma clathrata) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. While often observed by naturalists, in agricultural settings, it can act as a pest, particularly affecting forage crops in temperate regions.
The primary host plants for the larvae include various legumes such as clover (Trifolium), alfalfa (Medicago), and sweet clover. In specific areas, the caterpillar population can reach high densities, posing a threat to the productivity of forage fields and seed-producing areas.
The life cycle consists of the egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. The adult moth is characterized by a distinct latticed pattern on its wings. Caterpillars typically feed on foliage and complete their development by pupating in the soil. The species usually overwinters as a pupa, ready to emerge the following spring.
