Description

Sericothrips occipitalis is a species of thrips belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. As an agricultural pest, it is known for its ability to infest legume crops, particularly soybean, causing significant yield losses if not managed appropriately.

The primary host for this species is soybean (Glycine max). The insect typically colonizes the undersides of leaves during the early vegetative stages. By feeding on the plant tissue, it significantly stunts the growth of young plants and reduces the overall vigor of the crop.

The life cycle of Sericothrips occipitalis consists of several developmental stages: egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult. The development rate is highly dependent on ambient temperatures, with rapid generation turnover occurring during hot and dry weather conditions, which often leads to severe outbreaks.

Feeding damage is characterized by chlorotic spotting and silvering of leaves, which occurs when the insects rupture plant cells to feed on the sap. In cases of high infestation, this leads to leaf crinkling, reduced photosynthetic activity, and premature senescence. The presence of black fecal spots on the leaves is also a distinct indicator of their activity.
