Description

Systematic position. The soybean thrips (Sericothrips variabilis) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of legume crops, specifically targeting soybean, where it can reach high population densities during the growing season.

Host plants and damage symptoms. While soybean is the primary host, this species can affect various other legumes. Both adults and nymphs rasp plant tissues and suck the sap. Typical damage includes characteristic silvery or speckled spotting on leaves, leaf curling, and in severe cases, premature defoliation of the crop canopy.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, two larval stages, prepupa, pupa, and adult. Eggs are inserted into the plant tissue. Under favorable warm conditions, the life cycle is completed in a short period, allowing for several overlapping generations per season. This rapid turnover makes them particularly difficult to manage once established.

Economic impact. Feeding damage restricts the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, leading to stunted growth and yield reduction. Furthermore, heavy infestations result in lower seed weight and quality. The pest's role as a vector for various plant viruses adds an extra layer of agricultural risk, potentially causing systemic crop failures.

Management strategies. Effective control requires an integrated approach:

  • Cultural practices including timely weed control to remove alternate hosts.
  • Crop rotation to break the pest cycle.
  • Monitoring using sticky traps to determine population thresholds.
