The European serin (Serinus serinus) is a small passerine bird from the finch family (Fringillidae). While generally considered a part of the ecosystem, it can act as a significant agricultural pest, particularly when large flocks forage on cereal grains, sunflowers, and oilseeds during the critical phases of seed development.

The bird primarily affects oilseeds and various cereal crops. Its activity is most damaging during the milk and soft dough stages of seed ripening. By pecking out seeds from heads or spikes, these birds can cause substantial yield losses, significantly reducing the economic value of the produce and causing uneven maturation across the affected field.

In terms of biology and life cycle, the European serin undergoes a breeding season in spring and early summer. Damage caused by the European serin is categorized as physical consumption of grain and injury to plant tissues. Beyond the direct loss of harvestable mass, the mechanical damage inflicted by the birds creates entry points for fungal pathogens and mold, which leads to plant decay and potential loss of quality in the remaining portion of the crop.
