The European serin (lat. Serinus serinus) is a small passerine bird from the finch family. While widely appreciated for its song, it can occasionally act as an agricultural pest. When large flocks congregate near agricultural fields during the ripening season, they can cause localized but significant damage to specific crops.

The diet of the European serin primarily consists of small seeds. In agricultural contexts, they target oilseed crops like sunflowers, as well as various cereals and grasses. By consuming seeds directly from the head or ear of the plant, they reduce the overall yield and can negatively affect the germination rates in fields designated for seed production.

The biology of the species revolves around a highly active breeding season and subsequent post-breeding dispersal. As the young birds join the adults, they form flocks that search for concentrated food sources. This behavior often leads them to agricultural fields, where the availability of seeds at the late-milky or dough stage of development becomes a major attractant.

The damage caused is primarily mechanical: birds tear into seed heads, pods, and ears. This activity not only results in direct consumption but also compromises the plant's structural integrity. Furthermore, the damage created by the birds provides entry points for insects and fungal pathogens, which can exacerbate the losses caused by the feeding activity itself.

Management strategies focus on non-lethal deterrent methods to protect crops without harming the ecosystem. Farmers should employ a combination of tools to maximize success:
