Tropical warehouse moth

Systematic position: The tropical warehouse moth (Setomorpha rutella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tineidae. It is a cosmopolitan species that is primarily recognized as a significant pest of stored agricultural products, especially in environments where warm conditions persist throughout the year, such as silos, warehouses, and food processing factories.

Affected commodities: This pest has a broad host range, feeding on various dried plant materials. Key commodities at risk include cereal grains, flour, bran, oilseeds, dried fruits, tobacco, and spices. Due to its diet flexibility, it can also infest animal feeds and even natural fiber products if they are contaminated with organic debris.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Setomorpha rutella is strongly influenced by ambient temperature and humidity levels. Under favorable conditions, the developmental period is relatively short. Females deposit eggs directly onto the surface of the food source. The larvae develop within the substrate, creating tunnels of silk and debris as they feed and prepare for pupation.

Nature of damage and harm: The larvae are responsible for the damage. They consume the internal parts of grains or processed goods, significantly reducing product quality and mass. Their activity leaves the product heavily contaminated with fecal pellets, cast skins, and extensive webbing, which often renders the food items completely unsalable or unsuitable for human consumption.
