Description

Setoptus radiatae is a species of eriophyid mite belonging to the family Eriophyidae, order Prostigmata. These microscopic arthropods are specialized pests that inhabit the needles and buds of pine trees, often remaining undetected due to their extremely small size and cryptic feeding habits.

The primary host for this mite is Pinus radiata (radiata pine), though it can impact other pine species within its geographic range. The mites typically colonize the base of the needle fascicles, sheltered by the needle sheath, which provides both protection and easy access to plant vascular tissues for sap extraction.

The biology of Setoptus radiatae is characterized by a rapid life cycle consisting of egg, two nymphal stages, and adult phases. These mites remain on the host plant throughout their entire life span, with populations peaking during favorable climatic conditions when the host plant is actively growing.

Infestation damage manifests as chlorosis, curling, and premature senescence of the needles. Chronic feeding by the mites disrupts the tree's physiological balance, leading to stunting of young shoots, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and overall weakening of the tree, which can lead to decline if left untreated.
