Systematic position: The pine cone mite (Setoptus strobacus) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. These microscopic pests are highly specialized, often causing damage that is not immediately visible to the naked eye but results in significant physiological stress to the host tree's reproductive structures.
Host plants: This mite primarily infests various species of the genus Pinus, including the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). It is a major concern in seed orchards and forest nurseries, where the health of reproductive structures is critical for the production of healthy, high-quality seeds for reforestation.
