Cotton rats, belonging to the genus Sigmodon within the family Cricetidae, are prominent rodent pests known for their significant impact on agricultural operations. Primarily found throughout the Americas, these rodents are highly adaptable and thrive in diverse habitats, often causing substantial financial losses in commercial farming systems.

These rodents target a wide variety of crops, including cotton, corn, sorghum, and sugarcane, as well as various types of pasture grasses. By colonizing field margins, drainage ditches, and fallow lands, Sigmodon populations maintain a constant presence, ready to invade agricultural plots as soon as planting begins or as food sources become available.

The biology of the cotton rat is defined by a rapid reproductive rate. Under favorable conditions, females can produce multiple large litters per year. Young cotton rats reach sexual maturity very quickly, which allows populations to rebound or explode in density within a single growing season. This reproductive strategy makes them particularly challenging to manage once they establish a stronghold.

The damage caused by Sigmodon is both direct and severe. They frequently consume seedlings, gnaw on mature stems, and damage plant root systems, which results in stand depletion and stunted growth. Furthermore, their burrowing activity can disturb the soil surface and interfere with irrigation, while their presence near food storage facilities poses a risk of contamination.

Effective management and control measures should include:
