Fig fly

Silba adipata

Description

The Fig fly (Silba adipata) is a specialized pest belonging to the Lonchaeidae family, within the order Diptera. It is primarily known for causing significant damage to fig orchards (Ficus carica) in Mediterranean regions and other areas where figs are cultivated, leading to severe economic losses for growers.

This pest exclusively targets fig fruits. The adult female fly seeks out maturing syconia to lay her eggs. Once the larvae hatch, they burrow deep into the fruit, feeding on the inner tissues and seeds. This infestation often makes the entire crop unmarketable if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of Silba adipata is closely synchronized with the phenology of the fig tree. Multiple generations can occur throughout the growing season. The larvae go through several instars inside the fruit, causing the tissue to deteriorate and creating an environment conducive to secondary infections by various pathogens.

Damage caused by the fig fly is characterized by the premature yellowing and dropping of the fruit. Growers may observe small exit holes on the surface of the figs or find the interior filled with decaying pulp and larvae. Such fruits are entirely unsuitable for fresh consumption or commercial processing.

  • Strict sanitation measures: collecting and destroying all fallen or infested fruits promptly.
  • Monitoring the population density using specialized yellow sticky traps or bait traps.
  • Application of biological control agents during the peak flight of the adult flies.
  • Pruning and canopy management to improve air circulation and reduce favorable microclimates for the pest.

Effective management of Silba adipata relies heavily on an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Because the larvae are protected inside the fruit, curative chemical treatments are rarely effective, making early detection and rigorous orchard hygiene the most critical components of a successful control program.
