Robinia leaf miner

The Robinia leaf miner (Sinoe robiniella) is an invasive moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. Originally native to North America, this pest has successfully colonized various regions across Europe, where it specifically targets the foliage of Robinia pseudoacacia, commonly known as the black locust tree.

This insect is considered a significant defoliator, as its larvae live inside the leaves, mining the parenchymal tissues. While the damage is rarely fatal to a healthy adult tree, repeated annual infestations can severely weaken the plant, reducing its decorative value, biomass production, and overall physiological health in both urban landscapes and natural forests.

The life cycle involves multiple generations per year, depending on local temperatures. The female moths deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the leaf tissue, creating internal tunnels (mines). As they grow, these mines enlarge, eventually leading to the death of the surrounding leaf tissue and subsequent premature leaf fall.

Visual identification of an infestation is straightforward: leaves exhibit pale, blotchy mines that eventually turn brown and necrotic. During peak outbreaks, a tree may appear scorched or brown by mid-summer, significantly impairing the photosynthetic capacity of the foliage before the natural senescence period in autumn.

Managing the Robinia leaf miner requires a multi-faceted approach to minimize chemical reliance:

• Cultural practices: Removal and destruction of fallen leaves in autumn to disrupt the pupation cycle.
• Monitoring: Deployment of pheromone traps to pinpoint the emergence of adult moths for precise timing.
• Chemical control: Systemic insecticides applied to foliage during the early larval stage.
• Biological control: Encouraging native parasitoid wasps that feed on the larvae and pupae of the moth.
