Systematic position: The lead cable borer (Sinoxylon anale) is a member of the family Bostrichidae, order Coleoptera. Known as a significant technical pest, it is infamous for its ability to bore into not only natural wood but also soft materials, including lead sheathing of underground cables, which historically contributed to its common name.
Host plants: This species is a polyphagous insect that attacks a wide variety of hardwood trees. Common hosts include acacia, eucalyptus, mango, and various orchard species such as citrus and apple trees. It also thrives in stored lumber, bamboo structures, and dried wood products.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Sinoxylon anale consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females drill into the bark or wood surface to oviposit. The larvae bore galleries deep into the sapwood and heartwood, consuming the lignocellulosic material. The length of the life cycle is heavily dependent on ambient temperature and moisture content of the host material.
Damage and economic impact: The primary damage is caused by the larval stage, which creates extensive galleries filled with frass, effectively turning the wood into powder. The emergence of adults leaves distinct circular holes on the surface.
