Red-horned bostrichid

The red-horned bostrichid (Sinoxylon ruficorne) is a serious technical pest belonging to the family Bostrichidae. Known for its wood-boring habits, this beetle poses a significant threat to various tree species, particularly in warmer climates where it thrives in weakened or stressed timber.

This pest affects a wide range of fruit-bearing crops, including apple, pear, apricot, peach, and almond trees. It is also known to infest grapevines and various forest trees. The presence of the beetle is often detected by small, perfectly circular entry holes on the bark and piles of wood dust (frass) beneath the entry points.

The life cycle involves a complete metamorphosis. Adults bore into the wood to feed and mate, after which females lay eggs inside the tunnels. The larvae, which are the primary wood-destroying stage, develop within the branches and trunks, feeding on the wood tissue and creating extensive gallery systems that weaken the structural integrity of the plant.

The damage caused by the red-horned bostrichid leads to tree decline, branch dieback, and in severe cases, the death of the entire tree. Because they target the wood, they disrupt the xylem and phloem, which severely hampers the transport of water and nutrients throughout the plant, making affected trees highly unproductive.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include:

• Prompt removal and destruction of infested branches or dead wood.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
• Applying targeted insecticide sprays during the beetle's peak emergence period.
• Regular inspection of orchards to identify early signs of infestation.
