Systematic position: The genus Siteroptes belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Pygmephoridae. These microscopic organisms are known as specialized plant pests that often thrive in concealed environments such as leaf sheaths, florets, and grain hulls of various grasses.
Host plants: Siteroptes mites predominantly infest cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. They are also frequently found on various wild grasses, which serve as essential reservoirs that allow the population to survive and migrate to cultivated fields during the growing season.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is characterized by a rapid succession of generations during favorable temperature and humidity conditions. Overwintering occurs mainly as adult females hiding in crop residues, stubble, or soil crevices. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge and migrate to the young, developing parts of the host plants to initiate feeding and egg-laying.
