Description
Taxonomic position. The grain mite (Siteroptes cerealium) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Siteroptidae. As a specialized phytophagous mite, it poses a recurring threat to cereal production, often going unnoticed until significant damage is already caused to the developing crops.
Host crops. This pest primarily infests common cereal crops including wheat, rye, barley, and oats. It is also frequently found on various wild grasses in field margins and uncultivated areas, which serve as essential reservoirs for the mites to survive between planting cycles or after harvest.
Biology and life cycle. The mite undergoes a rapid life cycle involving eggs, larvae, and adults. Populations can explode under favorable environmental conditions, particularly when high humidity and moderate temperatures prevail. Females tend to inhabit protected areas like leaf sheaths and the interior of the spikes, making early detection and pesticide application challenging.
Nature of damage and pest significance. By feeding on the plant sap, these mites cause severe stress to the cereal plants. Symptoms often include stunted growth, leaf yellowing, and spikelet deformation. Furthermore, the mite facilitates the transmission of fungal pathogens into the kernels, leading to lower grain quality, poor germination rates, and economic losses for the farmers.
Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are essential to mitigate the impact of Siteroptes cerealium:
- maintaining crop rotation to disrupt the pest's cycle;
- removing weeds and crop residues that harbour the mites;
- plowing fields thoroughly after harvest to bury infested remnants;
- applying chemical acaricides promptly if infestation thresholds are reached.
