Brown beetle

Systematic position. The brown beetle (Sitophagus hololeptoides) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Tenebrionidae family. It is a cosmopolitan pest that primarily occupies granaries, warehouses, and industrial food processing facilities, thriving in sheltered environments.

Crops and damage profile. This species is a generalist feeder that attacks various plant-based products, including cereals, pulses, flour, and processed grain by-products. Adults and larvae tunnel into the grain kernels, consuming the endosperm and leaving behind empty hulls contaminated with frass and shed skins, which significantly lowers the market value of the stored commodities.

Biology and life cycle. The development of Sitophagus hololeptoides is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity within storage facilities. Females deposit eggs directly into the grain mass or cracks in structural components. Under optimal conditions, the life cycle is shortened, allowing for multiple generations per year, which can lead to rapid population outbreaks if left unmonitored.

Economic impact. Infestation by this beetle results in substantial weight loss of stored grains. Furthermore, the presence of the pest encourages the localized heating of the grain mass, which facilitates the growth of mold and attracts secondary pests. This deterioration renders the grain unsuitable for processing and consumption, posing a serious economic risk to farmers and grain storage operators.

Control measures. Effective management of this pest relies on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices:

• Sanitation of grain facilities to remove leftover debris and previous harvest remnants.
• Strict environmental control by maintaining low moisture and cool temperatures within the bin.
• Implementation of periodic fumigation using registered insecticides when infestation thresholds are exceeded.
• Utilization of pheromone traps for early detection of pest activity within the warehouse.
