Angoumois grain moth

The Angoumois grain moth (Sitotroga cerealella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. It is considered one of the most destructive pests of stored grains worldwide. Unlike many other pantry pests, this species is unique because it can infest crops in the field before harvest, carrying the infestation into storage facilities.

The moth targets a wide variety of cereal crops. Common hosts include wheat, corn, barley, oats, rye, and sorghum. In storage environments, it thrives in undisturbed grain masses, where larvae can penetrate deep into the kernels, making detection difficult during the early stages of infestation.

The life cycle begins when the female lays eggs on or near the grain. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the kernel, where they remain throughout their development, consuming the endosperm. After pupation inside the seed, the adult moth emerges by chewing a characteristic round hole through the pericarp, which is the primary indicator of infestation.

Damage caused by this pest is significant, as it results in substantial weight loss and decreased nutritional value of the grain. Infested batches exhibit reduced germination rates, making them unsuitable for seeding purposes. Furthermore, the presence of these moths often leads to secondary infestations by other pests and encourages the growth of molds due to moisture changes in the grain mass.

Management strategies focus on sanitation and preventive measures. Key practices include thorough cleaning of grain storage bins, maintaining grain moisture content below 14%, and keeping temperatures cool to inhibit development. In cases of severe infestation, professional fumigation with approved gaseous insecticides is the most effective solution to eradicate the moth population at all developmental stages.
