Somaticus angulatus is a species of beetle belonging to the family Tenebrionidae (darkling beetles) within the order Coleoptera. In the context of agriculture, this insect is recognized as a significant pest, particularly in semi-arid regions where it causes localized but severe damage to various staple crops.

The host range of this pest primarily includes cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and maize. Both adult beetles and their larvae, which are often categorized as false wireworms, are responsible for damage. They attack the germinating seeds and the root systems of young plants, frequently leading to poor crop establishment and economic losses.

The biology of Somaticus angulatus is highly adapted to dry environments, exhibiting a typical holometabolous life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is long-lived and resides beneath the soil surface, feeding on subterranean plant parts. This subterranean lifestyle provides protection against many natural predators and some environmental stressors.

Damage symptoms often appear as chlorosis, wilting, and sudden death of seedlings. By consuming the primary roots and the mesocotyl, the pest prevents the plant from accessing necessary nutrients and water. In fields with high infestations, plant density can be drastically reduced, requiring replanting and increasing production costs.
