The host range of this species is quite broad, making it a polyphagous pest. It primarily attacks horticultural crops, fruit trees, and various industrial crops including cotton, tea, and leguminous plants. By feeding on the foliage, the larvae cause direct physical damage to the plant structure.

The life cycle of Somena scintillans progresses through four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Eggs are laid in clusters, often on the underside of leaves. Larvae are the primary feeding stage, exhibiting high consumption rates as they grow through several instars. Pupation occurs within protective silken cocoons placed on the plant surface or in sheltered areas.

The damage caused by this insect is primarily characterized by the destruction of leaf tissue. Young larvae begin by scraping the epidermis, while older larvae consume entire leaf blades, leaving only the veins. This defoliation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, leading to stunted growth, fruit drop, and significant yield losses in commercial plantations.
