Description
The brown-tail moth (Somena similis, often referred to as Euproctis chrysorrhoea) is a notorious defoliating insect belonging to the family Erebidae. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, this species is known for its high reproductive capacity and the irritant hairs found on its larvae, which pose both an agricultural and a human health hazard during population outbreaks.
This pest has a wide range of host plants, predominantly affecting deciduous trees and shrubs. Common orchard targets include apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees. Beyond cultivated crops, they frequently colonize forest species like oak, hawthorn, and willow. Intense infestations can lead to total defoliation of the canopy, severely weakening the trees and leading to reduced fruit yields in subsequent years.
The lifecycle of the brown-tail moth involves one generation per year. The larvae overwinter in communal silken tents constructed from leaves and silk, providing them protection against harsh weather. In the spring, they emerge as the buds start to swell and begin feeding gregariously. As the caterpillars mature, they disperse throughout the tree, consuming leaf tissue and skeletonizing foliage before pupating in early summer.
The damage caused by Somena similis is primarily due to the intense feeding behavior of the larvae. Large groups of caterpillars can strip branches bare, leaving only the primary veins. This process causes significant stress to the host tree, often halting growth and compromising the overall health of the orchard. Furthermore, the urticating hairs of the larvae can cause persistent rashes and allergic reactions when they come into contact with skin.
Control strategies for the brown-tail moth focus on physical, biological, and chemical interventions. During the dormant winter season, the most effective practice is to prune out and burn the characteristic silken winter webs before the larvae emerge. If infestations persist, biological control agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis are highly effective in spring, while synthetic insecticides should be applied only as a last resort in compliance with local agricultural regulations.
