Sphaeroderma

Sphaeroderma is a genus of flea beetles within the subfamily Alticinae and the family Chrysomelidae. These small, jumping insects are recognized by their thickened hind femora, which facilitate jumping, a characteristic defense mechanism. While they are often considered minor pests, they can become problematic in gardens and agricultural settings when their populations surge.

The primary hosts for Sphaeroderma species are plants belonging to the Asteraceae family. They frequently infest crops such as artichokes, as well as various thistles and other weeds. Their presence is often linked to the availability of these specific host plants, making garden sanitation and weed control essential for minimizing infestation risks.

The life cycle of Sphaeroderma involves distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults typically overwinter in soil or leaf litter, becoming active in the early spring as temperatures rise. Eggs are laid either on the leaf surface or within plant tissues. The larvae are primarily internal feeders, which differentiates them from many other flea beetle species that are external leaf eaters.

Damage to host plants manifests in two ways. Adults feed externally, creating small, shot-like holes in the foliage, which reduces the plant's aesthetic value and vigor. Larvae act as leaf miners, creating serpentine tunnels between the upper and lower leaf epidermis. This internal feeding disrupts nutrient transport and photosynthesis, potentially leading to leaf necrosis.
