Sphaerophoria is a genus of hoverflies belonging to the family Syrphidae within the order Diptera. While often investigated in agricultural contexts, these insects are not pests; rather, they are significant beneficial organisms. Recognizing their role is essential for any integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on sustainable agriculture.

Taxonomically, the genus includes several species known for their slender bodies and wasp-like markings. Adults are highly mobile and serve as efficient pollinators for various flowering plants. Their contribution to ecosystem health is twofold: pollination as adults and predatory control of soft-bodied pests as larvae.

Protective measures are essentially conservation efforts. Since these hoverflies are sensitive to chemical inputs, farmers should prioritize the following:

  • Maintain non-crop floral habitats to provide nectar for adults.

  • Monitor pest populations to ensure chemical intervention is only used when strictly necessary, choosing selective products that spare natural enemies.
