Sphaerophoria cylindrica

Systematic position. Sphaerophoria cylindrica belongs to the order Diptera and the family Syrphidae (hoverflies). These insects are well-known for their mimicry, often resembling stinging wasps to deter predators. The adults are characterized by their distinct, elongated, cylindrical abdomens which are marked with yellow and black patterns.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. While adults are beneficial pollinators feeding on nectar, the larvae are primarily predatory, feeding on aphid colonies. However, under specific ecological pressures, larvae may switch from an aphid-based diet to feeding on the tissues of young plant leaves and stems.

Nature of damage and economic importance. While traditionally considered beneficial biological control agents, their phytophagous tendencies can become problematic under certain conditions. Larval feeding on delicate plant parts like buds and young shoots can lead to tissue scarring, stunted growth, and deformity. This impact is significant in controlled environments like greenhouses where populations can reach high densities.

Host plants. These flies can be found on a variety of hosts, including vegetable crops, ornamental plants, and flowering fruit shrubs. The damage is most frequently observed when aphid populations are depleted, forcing the larvae to seek alternative food sources from the host plants themselves. They pose a higher risk to succulent, high-value nursery crops.

Control measures. Management should prioritize ecological balance. Since they are also beneficial insects, broad-spectrum insecticides should be avoided to protect the predatory populations.
