Description

The Brown-tail moth (Sphrageidus similis) is a moth species of the family Erebidae. It is considered a significant agricultural and forestry pest in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, known for its ability to cause severe defoliation of various deciduous trees and shrubs due to the gregarious feeding behavior of its larvae.

This pest has a wide range of host plants, showing a clear preference for rosaceous species. It frequently attacks fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, cherry, and hawthorn. In addition, it thrives on ornamental and forest trees, including oak, willow, and beech, which allows the population to persist in diverse landscapes beyond managed commercial orchards.

The biological cycle of this species consists of one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in communal silken webs securely attached to twigs or branches. As soon as temperatures rise and buds begin to burst in early spring, the larvae emerge from their wintering nests to feed on the tender young foliage. Pupation occurs later in the summer within cocoons spun between leaves, leading to the adult moth stage in late summer.

The damage caused by the Brown-tail moth is primarily due to larvae feeding, which can range from minor skeletonization to complete stripping of the foliage. Heavy infestations weaken trees significantly, reducing their growth rates and overall health. Furthermore, the caterpillars possess irritating hairs containing toxins that can cause severe skin rashes and respiratory issues in humans, requiring extra caution during control measures.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Cultural practices, such as manually pruning and destroying the overwintering nests during the winter months, are highly effective and environmentally friendly. During the growing season, if populations exceed economic thresholds, the use of targeted biological controls, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, or selective chemical insecticides applied at the correct developmental stage is recommended.
