Description
Taxonomic classification: The genus Spilosoma belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae, subfamily Arctiinae. It comprises several species, with Spilosoma lubricipeda (the white ermine moth) being the most prominent representative widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere.
Host plants: This pest is a generalist herbivore (polyphage). Spilosoma larvae feed on a wide variety of herbaceous plants. In agricultural settings, they are particularly damaging to vegetable crops including carrots, cabbages, beets, and potatoes, while also causing significant defoliation to berry bushes, ornamental plants, and young fruit tree seedlings.
Biology and life cycle: Adult moths are medium-sized with white or yellowish wings adorned with small black spots. Their life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves. The larvae are covered with dense, hair-like bristles, which provide protection against predators.
Damage patterns and economic impact: The primary damage is caused by the caterpillars, which possess robust chewing mouthparts. Early instar larvae skeletonize the leaves, consuming the tissue between veins, while later instars can strip entire leaves completely. Severe infestations lead to rapid defoliation, which severely hampers plant growth, reduces photosynthetic efficiency, and diminishes overall crop yields.
Control measures: Effective management of Spilosoma requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Regular monitoring of fields and manual removal of egg masses.
- Application of biological insecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis.
- Use of approved systemic or contact insecticides when pest pressure exceeds economic thresholds.
- Autumn soil cultivation to destroy overwintering pupae hidden in the upper soil layers.
