Description
Systematic position. The Fern Tiger Moth (Spilosoma pteridis) is a member of the order Lepidoptera, belonging to the family Erebidae and the subfamily Arctiinae. These moths are characterized by their distinct morphology, with caterpillars often covered in long, dense setae, which serve as a defense mechanism against potential predators in their natural habitats.
Host plants. As a polyphagous species, this moth feeds on a variety of plants, though its name suggests a specific affinity for ferns (Pteridophyta). Apart from ferns, the larvae can cause damage to various herbaceous plants and deciduous shrubs.
