Sumatran tiger moth

Spilosoma sumatrana is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae and the subfamily Arctiinae. Taxonomically, it is classified within the order Lepidoptera. While many species in this genus are known for their distinct appearance, Spilosoma sumatrana is recognized primarily in its regional range as a caterpillar that can cause significant damage to botanical species.

This insect is a known polyphagous pest, capable of feeding on a wide variety of plants across different families. It frequently affects agricultural crops, ornamental garden plants, and native forest species. Due to its diet flexibility, it can transition between wild vegetation and cultivated fields, making it a persistent challenge for local growers during the growing season.

The biological life cycle of this species follows the standard four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and imago (adult moth). The larvae are typically covered in dense, often irritating hairs, which serve as a primary defense mechanism against predators. Adult moths are mainly nocturnal and rely on environmental cues to synchronize their mating and egg-laying processes.

The damage caused by Spilosoma sumatrana is primarily foliar. Larvae in their early instars perform skeletonization of the leaves, while older instars consume large portions of the foliage, leaving only the primary veins. This widespread defoliation hampers the plant’s ability to photosynthesize, leads to stunted growth, and in severe infestation cases, can result in total crop failure.
