White ermine
Spilosoma urticae
Description
The White ermine (Spilosoma urticae) is a moth belonging to the family Erebidae and the subfamily Arctiinae. It is a widespread insect in the Palaearctic region, known for its larvae which act as polyphagous pests capable of damaging various herbaceous plants and agricultural crops.
The pest targets a wide range of host plants. The larvae feed on species such as stinging nettle, mint, and irises. In agricultural settings, they may infest crops including potatoes, beets, and legumes, often causing damage to foliage in gardens and commercial fields alike.
The life cycle typically involves one generation per year, though warmer climates may allow for a partial or complete second generation. The species overwinters as a pupa, protected by a dense cocoon hidden in leaf litter or the upper soil layers. Adult moths emerge in late spring or early summer, with females laying eggs in clusters on the undersides of host leaves.
The damage caused by this pest is primarily defoliation. As the larvae grow, their appetite increases, leading to skeletonized leaves or complete destruction of leaf tissue. Such damage reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant, leading to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and a significant decrease in total harvest quality if infestations are severe.
Effective management strategies combine cultural and chemical approaches. Cultural practices like autumn soil tillage and weeding are essential to disrupt the pupal stages and remove primary food sources for young larvae. For outbreaks, the application of targeted insecticides or biological control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis remains the standard procedure for crop protection.
- Regular monitoring of leaf undersides for egg batches.
- Weed management to eliminate early-stage larval habitats.
- Application of microbial insecticides during early larval development.
- Conservation of natural predators to suppress population growth.
