The yellow woollybear (Spilosoma virginica) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. The adult moths are typically white with small dark spots on their wings, but the larvae are the primary focus for pest control specialists.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of plant hosts. It frequently attacks a wide range of vegetables including beans, cabbage, carrots, and lettuce. Additionally, it can damage ornamental flowers, small fruits, and the foliage of young fruit trees. Growers should focus on sanitation, such as removing debris where pupae overwinter, and monitoring for egg masses to destroy them manually. Biological controls like Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are highly effective against young larvae. For larger infestations, targeted applications of registered insecticides can be used, ensuring compliance with local agricultural regulations and safety intervals.
