The three-cornered alfalfa hopper (Spissistilus festinus) is a small, triangular-shaped insect belonging to the family Membracidae within the order Hemiptera. Its unique body structure, characterized by a prominent pronotal crest, allows it to camouflage effectively among plant foliage.

This pest primarily infests legumes, with alfalfa, soybeans, and cowpeas being the most susceptible crops. It is widely distributed across various agricultural landscapes where its host plants are present, often exploiting weeds in the Fabaceae family as secondary hosts when primary crops are unavailable.

The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. These insects overwinter as adults, hiding in sheltered areas such as leaf litter or perennial grass clumps. Once temperatures rise in the spring, females begin the process of inserting eggs into the succulent stems of host plants.

The primary damage is caused by both adults and nymphs feeding on sap and by the female's egg-laying behavior. Females create a circular scar around the stem base while laying eggs. This girdling action restricts the translocation of nutrients, often causing the plant to become brittle and snap in windy conditions, leading to substantial crop loss.
