Strawberry sap beetle

Stelidota geminata, commonly known as the strawberry sap beetle, is a significant insect pest belonging to the Nitidulidae family within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are highly opportunistic and are notorious for causing heavy losses in commercial strawberry production by targeting ripening and damaged fruit.

While strawberries are the primary host, this species is known to infest various other fruits, including blackberries, raspberries, and even stone fruits. The beetle is attracted to the scent of fermenting fruit juices, making it a persistent problem in fields where hygiene is not strictly maintained.

The life cycle of the strawberry sap beetle is closely associated with decaying organic matter. They overwinter as adults in protected areas such as leaf litter or soil. Once temperatures rise, they migrate to host crops. Females deposit eggs on fruit, and the emerging larvae bore into the flesh, feeding extensively and rendering the fruit unmarketable.

Damage caused by this pest is twofold: direct consumption of the fruit and the introduction of pathogens. The feeding activities of the larvae create cavities that serve as entry points for various fruit rot fungi. Because the larvae often remain hidden inside the berry, they can easily be harvested, leading to quality control issues for growers.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach:

• Ensure rapid and frequent harvesting to minimize the time fruit spends in the field.
