Description
The oak shoot moth (scientific name: Stenolechia gemmella) is a specialist insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. It is recognized as a significant threat to various oak species (genus Quercus) throughout its natural distribution in temperate forest ecosystems.
This species primarily feeds on the shoots and buds of oak trees. While mature trees can often withstand moderate infestations, young oaks in nurseries and plantations are highly vulnerable to the feeding activity of the larvae, which can result in stunted growth and structural deformity.
Regarding its life cycle, the oak shoot moth typically completes one generation per year. The larvae spend the winter hiding inside the shoots or under the bark of the host tree. When temperatures rise in early spring, the larvae resume feeding, boring into the newly developing shoots to consume the internal tissues.
The damage caused by this moth is characterized by the withering and death of shoot tips. By tunneling inside the shoots, the larvae disrupt the vascular system of the twig, leading to wilting, foliage loss, and sometimes the death of the entire young branch. Severe outbreaks can significantly reduce the vitality of young saplings.
Management strategies for this pest focus on early detection and integrated pest management (IPM). Key actions include the pruning and destruction of infested shoots during the dormant season to reduce the larval population. In severe cases, targeted applications of systemic insecticides during the early spring, when larvae move to new shoots, can be effective in protecting young tree stands.
