Systematic position: The Azolla weevil (Stenopelmus rufinasus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This species is a highly specialized herbivore that has co-evolved with aquatic ferns of the genus Azolla, making it a key biological control agent for invasive populations or a significant pest in commercial cultivation.

Crops damaged: The primary host plants are various species of the floating fern Azolla, including Azolla filiculoides. In agricultural contexts where Azolla is utilized as a bio-fertilizer for rice paddies or as a high-protein feed source, the weevil can cause substantial damage to the fern biomass.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is entirely dependent on the aquatic host. The female lays eggs on the leaves, and the larvae burrow into the plant tissue upon hatching. The insect completes its development within the fern mat, pupating in a small cocoon attached to the plant, which allows for rapid population growth during warm weather conditions.

Damage and harmfulness: Both adults and larvae feed on the fern tissues, creating characteristic holes and galleries. When infestation levels are high, the feeding activity leads to the rapid collapse and chlorosis of the Azolla mat.
